Tech Specialty Classes
These are classes specialising in building general technical skills in a fully immersive English speaking environment. Offered starting in August 2026, these lessons are focused on computer literacy, computer programming and electronics.
A Thinkpad L15 Gen 1 ready to run in our lab.
Computer Literacy for ages 8-10/11-13/13+
All tech specialty classes take place in our computer lab on our custom operating system based on Edubunu which is a distribution of Linux. https://www.edubuntu.org/
Our focus is on keyboard-based computer skills, a big part of which is becoming familiar with keyboards and pointing devices, therefore our laptops have no touchscreen functionality.
Environment
In our computer literacy classes students study geography, science and maths. They learn how to use the internet and local AI to study these subjects, as well as others, effectively.
Learning aims
[typing, using computers, using the internet, developing a passion for learning]
Using marble atlas to compare different types of maps from different time periods and for different purposes.
Using gbrainy to build vocabulary and practice typing skills
Computer Programming for ages 8-10/11-13/13+
Equipment
All tech specialty classes take place in our computer lab on our custom operating system based on Edubunu which is a distribution of Linux. https://www.edubuntu.org/
Our focus is on keyboard-based computer skills, a big part of which is becoming familiar with keyboards and pointing devices, therefore our laptops have no touchscreen functionality. In computer programming classes, students use the ESP32 microcontroller board to build self contained systems using python.
Environment
In our computer programming classes students learn how to use programming to produce art/draw complex patterns, make music and control small computerised devices (Internet of Things devices). These projects use TurtleScript, javascript and C. The class assumes no previous programming knowledge and builds awareness and capability from the ground up.
Learning aims
[typing, using computers, familiarity with programming concepts, developing a passion for learning]
Using KTurtle to plot a fractal pattern and Freeplane to build a mindmap about how the script works.
Using Strudel.cc to write a song with an evolving structure and a random but in tune melody.
Electronics for ages 8-10/11-13/13+
Equipment
All tech specialty classes take place in our computer lab on our custom operating system based on Edubunu which is a distribution of Linux. https://www.edubuntu.org/
Our focus is on keyboard-based computer skills, a big part of which is becoming familiar with keyboards and pointing devices, therefore our laptops have no touchscreen functionality. In computer electronics classes, students use breadboards to build circuits and electrical systems.
Environment
Students learn to use the UNO R3 CH340, which is an 8-bit microcontroller development board to build more complex electronics.
In our Electronics classes students learn to build and design electronics. These projects use breadboards for step by step learning and practical experimentation without the need for soldering irons. Students also learn how to use computers to simulate and design small scale electrical systems.
Learning aims
[typing, using computers, familiarity with electronics concepts, developing a passion for learning]
Using Arduino IDE to control a servo through the CH340 and make a welcome sign, see you in class!
